A Wander Down Portobello Road

Portobello Road, Notting HillImage by toastbrot81 via Flickr

Portobello Road in London is known as a huge antiques market. It is a street in the Notting Hill area in the Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. It is famous for being the title of the movie ‘Notting Hill’ and the location of ‘Bedknobs and Broomsticks.’

The area has a long history and until 1740 it was a path named Green’s Lane which led from the gravel pits at Kensington to Kensal Green in London. When Portobello Farm was built Green Lane became Portobello Lane and then in 1841 it became Portobello Road. So, Portobello was constructed by the Victorians and much of its old character still remains.

Nowhere in the world is there so much for the collector, dealer, or designer as you will find here. The market is open on Saturdays but the shops are open six days a week.

There is a variety of shops, cafes, arcades, including Quicksilver games arcade and stalls all concentrated in one area. If you need a short break from the hustle and bustle of the shopping area (and it does get very busy) you can sit down and have a coffee, or a meal, or even completely step out of the crowds, before, after or even during your shopping trip, with a game or two in the Quicksilver Arcade.

This really is a fantastic place for those with a sense of history and atmosphere is one that you would never find anywhere else. Portobello Road on a Saturday when the market is open, is a fascinating place.
